Water water everywhere…

The disposal of waste or ‘grey’ water is a thorny issue for outdoor event organisers who face increasing guidance from bodies such as the Environment Agency.  Anyone who might once have relied on a ‘hope for the best and tip it away’ approach is needing to think again.  For many, the most conservative way of disposing of grey water is temporary storage before tankering off site to the local sewage works. But this fuel-heavy, time-consuming solution does not sit well with the ever-greener approach embraced – and publicly emphasised – by many event organisers.

Mobile reedbeds – designed to cope with the grey water produced in areas of temporary ‘population explosions’ – offer an attractive, eco-friendly and cheaper alternative.  They provide an on-site solution, avoid the limitations and varying effectiveness of the traditional soak-away and can also be used for attractive ‘green screening’.  They also give you a great added selling point for your green message.

Unlike permanent reedbeds, these mobile modules can be used in isolation or multiples to deal with your specific waste levels and do not require a continuous supply of water to survive. They are plug and play ready to treat water the moment they arrive on site.

Q&A

How does rentareedbed work?

The rentareedbed units are delivered on-site ready for action.  The internal chambers of each bed are filled with an artificial matrix based on an interchangeable cartridge system and incorporating cartridge filters and pH correctors.  The reeds in the chambers support microbes which clean the waste water passing through the bed to be discharged as clean water at the outlet.

What do I need to provide?

A reedbed is 5m x 1m (approx), so a flat area of 5.2m by 1.3m is required per unit – either hardstanding or the site can be levelled with wooden chocks.  Your showers need to be in-situ when we arrive but we do the rest, including installation and decommissioning and cleaning of the reedbed units on collection

How many reedbed units would I need?

We will calculate your specific reedbed requirements based on the number of shower heads you are using and the estimated running hours per 24-hour period.  In outline, each reedbed unit will service up to 12-15 showers running for 12 hours in each 24-hour period.  So, for example, if you have 50 shower heads running for this amount of time you would need four reedbed units.  Conversely, with the same amount of showers running for 3-4 hours each day, one reedbed would be sufficient.

 What does it cost?

Quotes include hire, delivery, installation, collection and cleaning.  At a distance, for example, of 50 miles from our bases in Somerset and Dumfries, a single reedbed for your event would cost just under £450 in total. We will also provide you with electronic copies of our logo/information for use on your own promotional material, including website.
